Rolfing® Structural Integration

Rolfing® Structural Integration enables the body to regain the natural integrity of its form, thus enhancing postural efficiency and your freedom of movement.

About Rolfing® Structural Integration

Rolfing® Structural Integration is a hands-on approach to bodywork and movement education that focuses on the body's connective tissue, known as fascia, and the relationship between posture, movement, and overall physical comfort.

Developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf, Rolfing is based on the understanding that the body functions as an interconnected system. Restrictions or imbalances in one area can influence how we move and experience tension elsewhere.

Through skilled touch, movement awareness, and an individualized approach, Rolfing aims to improve mobility, support more efficient movement patterns, and help people experience greater ease in their bodies.

People seek Rolfing for many reasons, including persistent tension, postural concerns, restricted movement, or simply a desire to feel more comfortable and connected to their bodies.

“You can affect all functions of all the bodies by working through the myofascial system – but this is by dealing with the whole person” – Ida Rolf

How does Rolfing® SI work?

Rolfing® Structural Integration uses skilled, hands-on techniques and movement awareness to address restrictions in the body's connective tissue, or fascia. Through varying degrees of pressure, gentle movement, and guided participation, the Rolfer works to encourage greater mobility, balance, and ease throughout the body.

Each session is tailored to the individual, taking into consideration their physical structure, movement patterns, personal goals, and comfort level. Rather than focusing solely on the area of discomfort, Rolfing explores how different parts of the body work together and influence one another.

The goal is not simply to address tension, but to help the body move and function with greater freedom and efficiency.

What is Fascia?

Fascia is a continuous network of connective tissue found throughout the body. It surrounds and supports our muscles, bones, nerves, organs, and other structures, helping everything work together as we move.

Healthy fascia allows the body's tissues to glide and move comfortably. Over time, factors such as injury, repetitive movement, inactivity, and everyday physical stress can influence how our bodies move and where we experience tension or restriction.

Rolfing® Structural Integration focuses on the relationships between these tissues, helping improve mobility, body awareness, and overall freedom of movement.

Rather than looking at one area in isolation, Rolfing considers how the entire body works together.

Dr. Ida Rolf recognized that the body continually adapts to the demands placed upon it. Over time, injuries, repetitive movements, habitual postures, and everyday experiences can influence how we carry ourselves and move through the world. These adaptations may create patterns of tension, restriction, or compensation that we don't always recognize until they begin affecting our comfort or mobility.

People seek Rolfing® Structural Integration for many different reasons. Some are experiencing persistent discomfort or limitations following an injury, while others notice that their bodies simply don't move or feel the way they once did. Many have already explored other approaches and are looking for a different perspective on how the body functions as a whole.

Rolfing appeals to a wide range of individuals, including athletes, musicians, performers, people with physically demanding careers, and those who spend long hours sitting or performing repetitive tasks. Others are simply interested in maintaining mobility, improving body awareness, and continuing to enjoy an active, comfortable life as they age.

Rather than focusing exclusively on an area of discomfort, Rolfing considers the relationships between different parts of the body and how they work together. By addressing patterns of restriction and encouraging greater movement awareness, Rolfing aims to support lasting improvements in ease, coordination, and overall physical function.

The Rolfing® Ten Series

One of the distinguishing features of Rolfing® Structural Integration is the Ten Series, a systematic approach to working with the entire body over ten sessions. Each session builds upon the previous one, focusing on different structural relationships while supporting greater balance, mobility, and integration throughout the body.

Although the Ten Series provides a framework, the work is always adapted to the individual and their unique needs.

Sessions 1–3: The Sleeve

These first three sessions focus on the more superficial layers of connective tissue, creating greater freedom of movement and preparing the body for deeper work.

Sessions 4–7: The Core

These sessions explore deeper structural relationships, including the pelvis, legs, spine, and head, with an emphasis on support, stability, and coordination.

Sessions 8–10: Integration

The final three sessions bring the work together, helping the body integrate the changes made throughout the series and encouraging more balanced, coordinated movement.

While the Ten Series provides a framework, every session is adapted to the individual. Your body, comfort level, and personal goals guide the work along the way.

"I have been happily using Patty Murphy's exceptional and professional Rolfing services since November of 2011. All I can say is wow- she is truly amazing with her technique! I researched Rolfing and found Patty online at the Princeton location. From my first session, I walked out of her office feeling like a million bucks. I have been suffering from pain from herniated discs in my back and plantar fasciitis for years- but one session with Patty and I was nearly pain free. I have since been seeing her almost every week and she has been tackling all sorts of problems of mine like poor posture and my one leg that is shorter than the other. I highly recommend Patty Murphy to anyone who has not found traditional medicine to be the answer- you won't be disappointed!"
